Karen and Beatle, Owners, Burns Bay Bookery

Say G’Day to Karen and Beatle, who’ve been proud to own Burns Bay Bookery for the last five years. Before the Bookery became “The Bookery” it was Moirs bookshop, that stood in the same place and was the go-to for Lane Cove’s locals to delve into all their literary delights.

Karen and Beatle both worked at Moirs for seven years, and learned all there is to know about bookselling, so when the opportunity came up for them to own the business they felt more than prepared to take the reins.

They knew the business inside and out, but more importantly, they knew the customers, and the customers knew them, which made the transition for their local community much smoother, and their locals made them feel so welcome.

With the onset of the pandemic, Karen and Beatle had to close for the beginning of April as they tried to make sense of what was going on. When they reopened two weeks later, they moved all their stock onto the pavement outside and didn’t let customers enter the store. Aside from the occasional hooligan who tried to get over the barriers, all their customers were super supportive of the restrictions and accepted any and all of the inconveniences.

The biggest hit for the Bookery has been the loss of extra-curricular business, as they loved their customers from the local schools and libraries, and they’re hoping they can get back in the store soon.

The Bookery has been sponsors of the Lane Cove Literary Awards for the last three years, and on top of this Karen and Beatle regularly donate vouchers to local schools and sporting clubs to help with fundraising.

Karen says that the last year has reinforced how much they respect and care for their staff, and also how lucky they are to have such a supportive community, and how much they love their job. She says that if we can smile through 2020, then we’ll be able to deal with anything!
