Meet Tim, Gaynor, Gordon and Mel of the Whittaker Family, who’ve been the owners of Adelaide Direct Stationers since 1995. At ADS you can always put a face to a name and the siblings all play their part. Gordon started the business, and Tim is the managing director, and he makes sure the same family values that have been so successful continue every day.
From their humble beginnings starting off in Stepney with just 2 employees, over the last 25 years ADS has grown into a leading supplier of office products in South Australia, and their team has grown to over 30.
The hard work put in by the Whittakers has paid off, and they have received a number of industry awards for excellence, including being awarded “Dealer of the Decade” back in 2010.
This year has been a rollercoaster for the team at ADS, as they were selected to be their Local Government Area’s preferred supplier in May, and they are thrilled to be able to supply South Australian councils with their products.
When COVID hit, the Whittakers quickly pivoted to make sure their local community had access to enough COVID safe products. They were kept busy fulfilling orders of hand sanitiser, facemasks and social distancing signs.
Recoginising the importance of community throughout this tough time, the team at ADS tried to support their local businesses as best as they could, increasing the frequency of their deliveries and being increasingly cautious about how they can provide the most COVID-safe deliveries.
Although ADS managed to weather the storm of COVID so far, many of their customers sadly shut their doors due to the restrictions. But the Whittakers was there for their loyal clients and helped them out with orders of COVID-safe products.
Aside from this, ADS has a longstanding commitment to sustainability and recognizes the impact of deforestation and single use plastics in their industry. To do their part, they launched the ADS Tree-Planting campaign this year where they have committed to planting two trees for every tonne of paper they sell. They also sponsor their local Hahndorf football and netball club and are developing a reconciliation action plan to implement soon.
Family businesses make up 70 per cent of Australian businesses, and they’re counting on us to support them, just like the Whittaker family has supported their local community.
