This is Brooke, owner of Something Special in Goulburn.
Brooke bought the store three years ago, but it has been around since 1991 and she remembers shopping in the store as a child – although she never dreamed of owning it back then.
When lockdowns hit, Brooke cut back her hours, but worked tirelessly advertising the business through social media and increasing its online presence. She also used this time to think of innovative ways to keep her business going such as offering phone payment and free local delivery.
Her local community loved this and was so supportive that by week four of lockdown, Brooke was spending as much time working on advertising and making deliveries than she was in store normally.
Although this was tiring, this experience has opened her mind to doing things in a different way and has made her more adaptable to change.
At the start of COVID-19 Brooke was preparing for the worst. But now, thanks to the outstanding support of the community, Brooke says she can see the light at the end of the tunnel. She says that being able to deliver a gift to someone’s loved ones and seeing the joy on their face can be a highlight of her day – a silver lining to the COVID-19 cloud.
The store sponsors the local charity golf day, regularly supplies gifts for school raffles and donates to community groups. Brooke looks forward to being able to contribute as best as she can to the community that supported her through these uncertain times.
